Workplace Justice (Fairness)

If your employees think your decisions or the situation is not fair, they may be resentful. Resentment can decrease well-being, loyalty and morale. Some may even steal or sabotage to get back at a work environment they perceive to be unfair.

• Examine your policies for both actual and perceived (how they appear to employees) fairness.
• Examine your procedures and daily operations for perceived fairness.
• Survey your employees about how they see fairness in your organization in areas such as promotion, pay, workspace, benefits, social involvement, interaction with the boss, work assignments, project involvement, teamwork, decision authority, skill discretion, etc.
• Examine the perceived fairness of interpersonal relationships. Are the interactions fair? Is confidentiality respected? Are people free to be honest? Are criticisms fair and balanced with praise? Is information shared openly? Are decisions made in a consistent and fair manner?
